Eco and Nature

The Gardens of Schloss Charlottenburg were initially laid in the final years of the seventeenth century, as the Schloss itself was being built as a fine country house. They have been continually developed over three centuries since as the Schloss was extended and its functions redefined as a Palace. This profusely illustrated e-book provides a place by place description of the gardens and their history, both for visitors and anyone interested in gardening and garden history, in particular the various approaches to garden design and its current character as a 'historic garden' - an official historic monument, as well as anecdotes drawn from diaries and letters.
__________________________

The Schloss Charlottenburg and its gardens lie at the heart of Berlin's historic district of Charlottenburg. This website in english is in development and is intended to provide information and views by and for local people and visitors alike to help promote an understanding of the place and its relevance as a historic monument and as a distinctive presence for the locality. The first publication is an e-book: The Gardens of Schloss Charlottenburg - an Illustrated Introduction, which provides a place by place account of the gardens and their history.

Since the fall of the monarchy at the end of the First World War, the Schloss and its gardens have been in public ownership and are currently managed and developed by a Foundation created jointly by the Federal German Government, the Bund, and two Federal regions 'Land' -  the City of Berlin and the region of Brandenburg, the Stiftung Preussische Schlösser und Garten Berlin-Brandenburg - the SPSG. They are responsible for a large portfolio of properties including eleven sites that collectively comprise the  UNESCO World Heritage sites: 'Palaces and Gardens of Potsdam and Berlin'. The Schloss Charlottenburg is excluded from that list. The SPSG are a self-certifying organisation for the management and restoration of Historic Monuments - 'Historisches Denkmalpflege' and their website provides a wide range of information covering many areas of expertise and useful information like ticket prices - www.spsg.de .

Disambiguation: This website has no formal or informal associations with the web address www.schlosscharlottenburg.de, which is set up as a feeder domain taking users to preussen.de - the official website of the House of Hohenzollern based at Burg Hohenzollern in Baden-Württemberg, which houses a museum. They are also active brewers of a distinctive beer marketed as 'Preussen Pils'. Previous generations of the family were Prussian Kings and German Kaisers until 1918, when Germany became a Republic.
